How Much Does a DUI Cost in Long Island?

You already know that you face fines from $500 to $1,000 for a first offense DWI, and that these DUI penalties increase significantly with each subsequent conviction. But fines imposed by the court, along with miscellaneous court costs and fees which will also be required, are only one aspect of the costs of a DUI. Below is a look at some of the many costs of a DUI that you may not have thought of but may nevertheless need to be prepared to face. To minimize the DUI cost in your case and fight for the best outcome possible, call 888-DUI-LAWYER.

Weeks or months may pass between the time of your arrest and your DUI trial. Unless you want to spend the entire time in jail, you will likely seek bail. Bail is an amount of money that you pay to the court in order to be released from jail, with a promise that you will return to court for any and all court appearances. If you show up to court, your bail money will eventually be returned to you, but if you fail to appear, your bail amount is forfeited.

Often times, the bail amount is too high for the average person to afford. In these cases, you can get a bail bond company to post the bail for you. They will charge a percentage of the bail amount to post the bond (around 10%), and this money is not refundable.

At 888-DUI-LAWYER, our representation begins at the moment of your arrest. We can represent you at your arraignment and argue for your release at a low bail amount, or even with no bail required at all. If you do need to post a bond, many bail bond companies will charge you a lower fee when you already have legal representation.

Getting Your License Back

If you driver’s license was suspended, the suspension will be lifted at the end of the suspension period, and your driving privileges will be restored. If your license was revoked, however, then you will need to apply for a new license, including paying application fees.

Getting Your Car Back

Most likely your car was impounded after you were arrested for DUI. The exact procedure for getting your car back differs depending upon the reasons the police are keeping it, but rest assured that retrieving your vehicle will cost you a couple hundred dollars in towing and storage fees.

DUI School

If you are convicted of DUI in New York, you will likely be referred for alcohol abuse screening and evaluation, which may lead to substance abuse counseling or DUI school. The costs associated with these tests and classes will run into the hundreds of dollars, and you will be expected to pay for them all.

Car Insurance

It may not come as a surprise to learn that your insurance rates go up after a DUI, but the actual amount of the increase will most likely shock you. The costs of SR-22 or “high risk” insurance, as it is called, will likely increase your current premium by 20% or more for as much as five years.

Ignition Interlock Costs

Ignition Interlock Devices (IIDs) are required to be installed on every vehicle operated by a person convicted of a first offense DUI in New York. The costs for having the IID installed are, you guessed it, your responsibility. You will also be required to pay a monthly fee for leasing and maintenance while the device is installed in your vehicle, and some companies charge a fee to remove it as well. Expect to pay around $100 for installation and $70-$80 a month.

DWI DUI Cost – Legal Fees

Many of the costs described above can be avoided by beating your DUI prosecution. The cost of hiring 888-DUI-LAWYER to defend you on your DUI can run as little as $3,500 without trial, but costs could range higher, depending upon the complexity of your case. Even if money is tight, the price you pay for an experienced and successful DUI attorney is worth every penny when you consider the costs of a conviction or of not getting the best result possible. Having your license revoked, losing your car to forfeiture, losing your job and more are all very real and likely results of a DUI conviction, particularly if you try to represent yourself or hire an attorney who is not skilled and knowledgeable in New York DUI defense.
